Probably the most likeable crickter ever from the wrong side of the Pennines!

There is a section in the book 'Penguins stopped play' where he bowled at Harry Thompson, the author, I dont recall exactly what happened but Goughie spent most of the net trying to Knock Harry's head off and really gave him agoing over, just for the banter of it!

I might have to read that agin thinking about it, made me laugh anyway!

I remember watching Gough during the 95 Ashes at Melbourne when England dropped all those chances..wait or was it during a series later on ??

Anywho, Goughy never gave up on that tour and cracked 51 and returned with a 6fer..

Wish him the best!

Brilliant! I really hope that the Dazzler gets to read this, KC, it sums up what we all feel.

Cracking cricketer; cracking bloke.

(Not sure about the silver sausage suit shenanigans he's currently touting on the telly, though)

Excellent piece. Captures the reasons why Goughy is/was so loved.

The career is gone, but the memories will live on for all of us who had the honour to watch him play live..

Gough was the most loved english cricketer in australia during the 90's.

He did this thing called trying, seemed to be one of the few who did.

Austin Healey doesn't do losing very well.

You mark my words, come Christmas it'll be Healey waltzing away with Strictly Come Dancing!

On another note, Darren Gough was without doubt the coolest criketer I ever met at Chelmsford. Him & Irani were legendary on the town.

Good times.

He <a href="http://spunout.wordpress.com/2008/05/31/weekend-youtube-darren-gough/" rel="nofollow">lost to Austin Healey at arm-wrestling</a>, though.

Nevertheless, county cricket, and cricket in general, will miss the Dazzler.

Love him on his radio show too - goes rabbiting on - such a blissful contrast to the carefully controlled meeja-right tones of the current England boys - no right areas for Darren!
