Several cricket items in a slightly unusual place‏

In the Conan Doyle, a pub at the top of Leith Walk in Edinburgh, there is this:

Shot!

Now, before you ask, I have no idea where the third stump is. Or how someone managed to throw a cricket ball at the bat at just the right moment when I took the photo. What I do know is that one of the locals offered to ‘rip it off the wall’ for me if I bought him a pint. I declined his polite offer.

The pub itself isn’t great. It’s a 7/10. It has a frankly poor selection of ales (Bass on draught, Deuchars and another one which I’d forgotten about by the end of my Saturday night). One thing the Conan Doyle has always had on its side though is that it’s cheap. A pint of Guinness will set you back just over £2 usually, which for a pub in the centre of a major city is somewhat amazing these days.

However, this night I would not be paying that much for my Guinness:

Remember when pound a pint was 'a thing'

It is for this reason that I cannot remember what the guest ale was.

DON'T BE LIKE GATT!

Mike Gatting wasn't receiving the King Cricket email when he dropped that ludicrously easy chance against India in 1993.

Coincidence?

Why risk it when it's so easy to sign up?

  1. ah, pound a pint.

    simpler times.

the quantities of snakebite i must have consumed during my first year of university.

i’m pretty sure everyone who lived in hull student halls in 2004-05 will have purple internal organs for the rest of their lives.

  2. In our uni, people decided snakebite wasn’t ridiculous enough, so they started a vogue for ‘scrumpy and stella’ snakebite. Idiots.
    They’re all dead, of course.

  3. Sam

Indeed pound a pint nights are a thing of the past (or so I thought). I might have let out a girly yelp when I saw the sign in the pub.

I went through a period of drinking ‘power shandys’.

    A smirnoff ice
    Half a lager
    A shot of vodka

There was also a student night around 2001 in Plymouth called Vodbull. I think there were a few across the country. From opening until about 10 a double vodka and a dash of vodka was £1. You were only alowed to buy 9 of these at a time, but that filled 2 pint glasses.

And that tended to end my evening.

  4. Sorry to barge in like this, but (cricinfo):

Wright bats for Laxman at No. 3

    Could fill India’s hole

  5. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to a joke.

Fred Grace, we honour you with inclined headwear. That was a beaut.
